Yin Yoga is a practice that emphasizes long-held passive stretches that target the deeper connective tissues. Yin yoga strengthens our joints, ligaments and deep fascial network, and is of increasing value to practice as we age.
In this deeply nourishing class we are also cultivating mindfulness, helping us to come home to a deeper and richer aspect of ourselves. Most poses are done on the floor, and blocks and bolsters are liberally used and encouraged.
NOTE: Please bring a mat, light to medium blanket for cover and as prop, and any props or bolsters you desire for extra supports. Here’s some important info on what to bring:
Please bring your own:
More about the props:
If you’ve attended any of my yin yoga class before, you’ll be familiar with some of the props we us. We often use a couple of yoga blocks (either firm or soft foam) which can be used under knees, hips, head, etc. We also tend to use bolsters liberally for under the knees, or to lean on while we soften into the yin postures. I personally own a cylindrical bolster from Halfmoon products, but there are many styles and sources. (I do not however recommend the malleable buckwheat filled bolsters to begin with, as they will not be firm enough to hold bodyweight for upright support.)
Here are a few links to give you an idea of the kind of props we might use in class. These links are not an endorsement, but are provided solely so that you can see the kind of props I'm talking about.
-Here is a link to view various bolsters on Halfmoon website. https://shophalfmoon.ca/search?type=product,page,article&q=bolsters*
-Here is an image of some foam blocks from walmart: https://www.walmart.ca/en/ip/Yoga-369-Yoga-Block/5YAZFFC5U3I8
-Here's a link to see chip blocks (softer and ore pliable than the harder foam): https://well.ca/products/halfmoon-chip-foam-yoga-block_125597.html
Please do not feel that you have to buy all of these, especially if you're just starting out. I know that it can a bit of an investment when beginning from scratch. What is advised however is a yoga mat and if not a bolster then a pillow or rolled blanket for under the knees, head or hips, etc.
I think that there are a couple of places in Port Alberni where you can purchase mats, blocks and bolsters - maybe Walmart or Canadian Tire. In Nanaimo you can try Sport Check. If anyone knows of more please let me know so that I can share.
One option for purchasing your yoga gear can be online, such as through the HalfMoon site which has quality products. I’ve bought from them before and they have very durable. (https://shophalfmoon.ca) I’ve included a link below that will give you 15% off your purchase through their referral program. Of course you might want to try Walmart.ca, or Amazon for example.
Please note that I am not affiliated in any way with HalfMoon, I just want to share a cost savings option for you if you are interested.

Please bring your own:
- yoga mat,
- a light to medium blanket or towel or two to use as an easy prop, for padding, and/or for cover during savasana (final resting pose),
- and any other props or bolsters you desire for extra supports (see below)
- Because I’m not a yoga studio, I don’t own extra blocks or bolsters, so in encourage you to have your own so that you can use for both in class, and for your own home practice and comfort. Please note, it’s not necessary to bring bolsters and blocks, so don’t worry if you can’t or just choose not to - a mat and blanket is recommended however.
- Please leave shoes outside of yoga studio door
- Any extra articles such as jackets, bags etc, can be left inside and in the back room of the studio so as not to overly clutter the yoga space. (Clear room, clear mind :) )
- Reminder to silence phones during class

I believe that our body archives all experiences that we weren’t able to safely process at the time, and yoga is a wonderful way to help release that held tension, stress and congested energy. Yoga opens us up to our natural health, vitality and joy - strengthening and awakening our body, mind and spirit!

In this class we'll take a little time to do some journaling, considering what we would like to manifest in our lives - and then we'll drop into a deeply relaxing state of rest, allowing the seeds of our intentions to take root in our subconscious during the deeply restful practice of Yoga Nidra.
Yoga Nidra means yogic sleep and is among one the deepest possible states of relaxation while still maintaining full consciousness. This ancient practice is known to reduce tension and anxiety, as well as facilitate healing in the body.
Join us in this healing class where you will journal a little, and then rest comfortably on your back, using blankets and bolsters to fully release and relax for about 40 minutes. During this time you will simply listen to my voice as I guide you into a state of deep relaxation while you remain awake and aware as you fully release tension in the body, and the mind.
Yoga Nidra provides you with a simple and effortless way to simply observe sensations, thoughts and emotions without being completely drawn into them and affected by them, instead remaining in a peaceful and relaxed state.
The experience teaches us that we are more than our thoughts and emotions, and that there is at all times a deep resource within.
FOR YOUR COMFORT PLEASE NOTE:
Bring a yoga mat and a light blanket for cover if you'd like, and even a blanket to lay on for extra comfort. If you think you need it, also light pillow or something soft for under your head is advised, as well as a bolster or pillow for under your knees. You will be lying on the floor for about 40-45 minutes.
Also bring a journal/note book, or paper and pen to dream and record your reflections.

About my yoga background:
Yoga has weaved its way in and out of my life since my early teens. After a back injury in my 30's I turned to yoga to help heal my body and in doing so I found that it also deeply nourished my mind and spirit. Finally, in 2011 I followed my long held dream and embarked on my training to become certified as a Yoga Teacher through Red Door Yoga.
Drawing from a training in classical Hatha, I integrate various styles of yoga with my main passion being informed by Insight Yin Yoga, learning much from Carly Forest.
My experience with Jin Shin Do® Acupressure and Reiki also influence my understanding of the body and it’s energy systems and I find that Yin Yoga is a superb practice to support healing and awakening for the body, mind and emotions.
